Introducing a model course full of Hakone's nature, art and food. You can also see Mt. Fuji from the viewing areas, depending on the weather! You will also be able to immerse yourself in hot spring baths, as Hakone is famous for its hot springs!

Return trip from Tokyo to Hakone

The journey introduced here includes a departure from Shinjuku, Tokyo to Hakone. The Odakyu Limited Express "Romancecar" is convenient when traveling to Hakone from Shinjuku. There is no need to transfer when departing from Shinjuku for Hakone-Yumoto Station, the entrance to Hakone, and the express train journey takes only 85 minutes. First, depart from Shinjuku for Hakone!

01 Take Japan's foremost mountain railroad, the Hakone-Tozan Train, from Hakone-Yumoto

(A) Hakone-Yumoto Station

Approx. 35mins

The Odakyu Limited Express "Romancecar" arrives at Hakone-Yumoto Station. Transfer to the Hakone-Tozan Train, which departs from Hakone-Yumoto Station for the mountains of Hakone. The Hakone-Tozan Train platform is right in front of the arrival platform. Go straight to the Hakone-Tozan Train!

The platform sign boards at Hakone-Yumoto Station are displayed in English, Korean and Chinese for your convenience.

The train looks over the magnificent mountains as it goes along. Be sure not to miss the view from the window as it crosses the bridge!

(B) Chokoku-no-mori Station

Experience art inside a forest in the Hakone Open Air Museum

Approx.5mins

Stop off at Chokoku-no-mori Station on the Hakone Tozan Train for the Hakone Open Air Museum, an outdoor art gallery that makes the most of nature and is just a 3-minute walk from the station. This is a chance to experience international masterpieces in Japan!

02 Tozan Train's last stop. Rest up in this historic holiday area.

(C) Gora Station

Approx. 10mins

Arrive at Gora Station, the last stop for the Hakone Tozan Train. Drop in at the souvenir shop in front of the station. Places to eat in the area include noodle restaurants and the famous Tamura Ginkatsu-tei for tofu-based cuisine. We recommend visiting the Gora area for lunch. "Tofu Katsu-ni" at "Tamura Ginkatsu-tei". A popular dish of fried, healthy specialty tofu that is topped with egg.

Go even higher on the cablecar to Sounzan

Transfer from the Hakone Tozan Train at Gora Station to the Hakone Tozan Cablecar. The cablecar goes from here to Sounzan Station at the peak of the mountain. Sounzan Station

(D) Sounzan Station

The cable car reaches its last stop, Sounzan Station, within about 10 minutes. Get off the cable car and the platform for your next mode of transport, the Hakone Ropeway, will be right in front of you. Take a moment to step outside the station first. Weather permitting, the view from the observation terrace in the parking area in front of the station stretches as far as the sea!

03 Views from the ropeway are spectacular!

(D) Sounzan Station

Approx.8mins

Depart for the highest point on the ropeway from Sounzan Station! Take a look at the distant mountains as you steadily ascend. When the ropeway reaches the top of the mountain, the view opens up in front of you, while steam rises up from volcanic activity in Owakudani below. If you're lucky, you'll even be able to see Mt. Fuji!

The ropeway passes over a deep valley as steam rises from below. The view when crossing the valley is a particular highlight!

The ropeway is recognized by Guinness World Records as the "busiest gondola lift" for the number of people who board every year.

(E) Owakudani Station

About 8 minutes from Sounzan is Owakudani, the highest station

The first thing you notice when stepping off at Owakudani Station is the smell of sulfur. Volcanic gas and sulfur are emitted as a result of volcanic activity. Experience an active volcano at Owakudani. Stores in Owakudani sell famous "black eggs" - eggs boiled in hot water emitted from Owakudani, which are said to increase longevity.

Volcanic gas and steam spews out all over the mountain surface. This is an incredibly powerful sight.

When boiled in water from Owakudani, the scientific reaction is for the shell to turn black. It costs 500 yen for five eggs.

04 Transfer to ropeway for Togendai
in the Lake Ashi area

(E) Owakudani Station

Approx.
15mins

Ride the ropeway once more after you have finished sightseeing in Owakudani. This time, take the ropeway to Togendai, bound for Lake Ashi. You can see Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi between here and Ubako Station, the next stop. Don't forget your camera!

(F) Togendai Station

It takes about 15 minutes to get from Owakudani Station to Togendai Station in the Lake Ashi area. As you advance, the scenery becomes like nothing seen previously as you get closer to Lake Ashi.

If the weather is favorable, you can view Mt. Fuji as you travel through the air on the ropeway

Information on a welcoming hot spring location: Hakone Lake Hotel

Just a 3-minute walk from Togendai Station, Hakone Lake Hotel's hot spring baths are also open to non-guests (11:00 - 16:00). Enjoy views of the Hakone countryside from the window while bathing. Odakyu Hakone Lake Hotel is scheduled to be reopened in March 2013. It will feature new open-air hot spring baths and an updated restaurant.

05 The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise traverses the peaceful surface of Lake Ashi

(F) Togendai-ko

Approx. 40mins

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise departs from Togendai at the bottom of the Hakone ropeway. Conveniently, you can transfer within the same building. Visit the Togendai View Restaurant in the building while waiting for departure of the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise. Rest a moment and enjoy some delicious cakes and coffee while looking out over Lake Ashi.

While on the cruise, you will see Hakone's highest mountain, Mt. Komagatake, and the archways of the two shrines that float on the lake. As you get closer to Moto-Hakone-ko, Mt. Fuji appears above the mountains. Moto-Hakone-ko is a harbor with a view of Mt. Fuji. You can pay an extra 400 yen to enjoy the cruise in a deluxe suite.

06 Visit the holy Hakone Shrine at Moto-Hakone

(G) Moto-Hakone-ko

It takes about 40 minutes to reach Moto-Hakone on the Sightseeing Cruise. Moto-Hakone-ko is adjacent to a frequently-used bus terminal. There are also restaurants and gift shops in the area. An amazing sight nearby is the huge archway to Hakone Shrine. Hakone Shrine is a 5-minute walk in the direction of the archway. The red gate and buildings look beautiful against the green of the surrounding trees. Be blessed by visiting the tranquil main shrine.

Close to Moto-Hakone-ko is Cedar Avenue, a remnant of an ancient road, about a 3-minute walk from Moto-Hakone in the opposite direction to Hakone Shrine.

Information on locations for desserts in Hakone: Hotel De Yama Salon de The Rosage

A shuttle bus leaves Moto-Hakone for Salon de The Rosage in Odakyu Hotel de Yama in the Lake Ashi area. The building was designed to look as though it is floating on Lake Ashi. Here you can enjoy the finest desserts right in front of the lake. There are many original cakes, including the popular apple pie. You can also enjoy tea that has been recognized by the Japan Tea Association for its fine flavor. The shop on the 2nd floor stocks desserts and goods, including 30 different types of tea, so you will definitely want to pay them a visit.

(G) Moto-Hakone

Approx. 35mins

Your enjoyable journey in Hakone is entering its final stages. From Moto-Hakone, take the Hakone Tozan Bus to Hakone-Yumoto, where the Odakyu Limited Express "Romancecar" stops. The Hakone Freepass is also valid on the Hakone Tozan Bus, so you can ride it without worrying about the fare.

(A) Hakone-Yumoto

You might find something to remember your trip by in the souvenir shop

It takes about 35 minutes to get to Hakone-Yumoto Station by bus. The last part of your trip is to find a souvenir in Hakone! Souvenir shops can be found in front of Hakone-Yumoto Station. We recommend the famous "Omanju" and handicrafts such as wooden mosaics. Otherwise, the "Terifuri-ningyo" handicraft is a mysterious household ornament that takes the form of a man or a woman depending on the weather. Go around the various shops looking for something to remember the trip by!

"Terifuri-ningyo" are such popular souvenirs that they can be hard to find.

Standard "manju" are a Japanese gift with a unique castella-like texture.

When staying in Hakone, we also recommend touring the hot springs at your leisure.

We recommend staying in Hakone to enjoy it even more than when on a day trip.

While on the model course, ride the bus from Gora Station to the Sengokubara area to get closer to the Hakone countryside. In addition to the fields of Japanese silver grass and wetlands, this resort area features the Museum of Saint-Exupery and The Little Prince in Hakone, and Hakone Glass Forest Venetian Glass Museum.  Stay in the Odakyu Hakone Highland Hotel. Relieve the tiredness from your journey in the muddy white hot spring waters.
