Tanzawa-Oyama

Oyama is located at the eastern end of the Tanzawa Range. This pyramid-shaped mountain is visible from the sea and has been worshipped by seafarers from ancient times. The mountain is also known as Afuri-san (lit. "rain-making mountain") and people pray to it for rain. The top of Oyama affords a panoramic vista of the Sagami Plain, and on clear days climbers can enjoy the view all the way to the Izu Peninsula, the Boso Peninsula and Mount Fuji. The Oyama cable car operates partway up the mountain, and the approach to Oyama is lined with lodgings and souvenir shops all the way to Oyama cable station. One of the best-known souvenirs from Oyama is the Oyama top, a folk toy produced here since the Edo period (1603-1868). Tofu made from the clear waters of Oyama is also popular.
