Visit Art Museums Full of Personality, Surrounded by Beautiful Nature

Hakone, an area that’s picturesque wherever you go, is also a treasure trove of art museums. There are must-see facilities, each with its own individuality and features, but one thing they all have in common is that they can be enjoyed while taking in the beautiful natural surroundings. As you stroll through the vast outdoor grounds, there are facilities where you can enjoy sculptures by world-renowned artists, and where crystal glass sparkling in the garden makes you feel as though you’ve been transported to another world. There are many additional facilities scattered here and there that are well-regarded not only for their unique collections but also for their locations and cafes. Visiting art museums, where you can enjoy a feast of nature and art, is a pleasure unique to Hakone.

A Masterpiece by a Master Craftsman that Blends into Nature. Admire the Masterpieces of Art While Strolling/The Hakone Open-Air Museum

An art museum where you can walk and admire around 120 masterpieces by world-famous masters such as Rodin, which are exhibited outdoors on a vast site of 10,000 square meters. Large-scale works of modern sculpture by Henry Moore, Niki de Saint Phalle, and others, are displayed freely under the blue sky. Inside the museum, which takes advantage of the rolling hills, there are also streams and ponds, making it a scenic location with views of the ocean on the horizon. The joy of admiring sculptures that blend in with nature is an experience unique to this museum, and one of its appeals is that you can also roam freely outdoors, so even small children can enjoy art.

In addition to outdoor sculptures, there is a "Picasso Pavilion" on the premises that mainly introduces works by Pablo Picasso. The collection of 319 items, including 188 pieces of ceramic art, exhibits the pieces in succession. The indoor exhibition hall displays masterpieces by artists such as Brancusi and Giacometti as well. This facility also features hands-on art experiences, such as the "Net Forest," where children can play, a cafe, a buffet-style restaurant, and a shop selling museum goods and Hakone souvenirs — people of all ages can enjoy the day.
