Enjoy mountains and beaches created by volcanoes, plus spectacular scenery, and gourmet food. Welcome to the Izu Peninsula.

Surrounded by the sea and mountains, Izu is a popular tourist destination in an ideal location to enjoy both of them. The area has many different attractions and views in all directions, both on the ocean and mountainsides, and offers a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji soaring nearby. We will introduce here spots where you can enjoy the charms of each area of the Izu Peninsula, including the wonderful and satisfying views, gourmet areas with fresh seafood among mountains and waterfalls, and spectacular landscapes where rocks with unusual shapes extend!

A Boardwalk at the Top of the Mountain, Surrounded by the Sea and Sky/Komuroyama Ridge Walk "MISORA”

Located near the Sagaminada Sea in the Higashi Izu area, Mt. Komuro is 321 meters above sea level. It is said to have been formed by a splash of lava during a volcanic eruption about 15,000 years ago. Sit on the retro-style lift at the foot of the mountain for a 5-minute stroll in the air to the top! At once the field of vision opens up, and a refreshing world unfolds. From the wooden boardwalk that encircles the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy a blue world where the boundary between sea and sky becomes indistinguishable. We’d like you to experience an overwhelming sense of openness as if you were blending into the great outdoors.

The cafe at the top of the mountain has a spectacular view of the ocean and sky from every seat. There is a wooden deck and observation bridge at the back of the restaurant that is exclusively for cafe users and is set up as if it were floating in the air. The bridge, covered only with transparent glass, gives the viewer the feeling of blending in with the landscape. It is a popular photo spot with picturesque scenery.

There is also a restaurant at the foot of the mountain where you can enjoy dishes made from Izu's seafood and mountain products, as well as a gift store and a lift station at the foot of the mountain in the same location.

Mysterious Formations Shaped by the Power of Nature / Jogasaki Coast

About 4000 years ago, lava erupted from Mt. Omuro and flowed into the ocean, creating this coast. The cliffs stretch for about 9 km and are lined with beehive-shaped pillars that were formed when the lava cooled and hardened. We’d like you to take a stroll along the Jogasaki Picnic Course, a 3-km nature study path (estimated time: 90 minutes on a slow walk), to appreciate the mysterious formations created by the earth.

Around the starting point, there is a restaurant in a restored fisherman's hut from the Edo period, where you can enjoy fresh local fish. Near the goal is the 48-meter-long, 23-meter-high Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, a thrilling spot with a spectacular view.

Cape Kadowaki, the most scenic spot on the Jogasaki Coast, is home to the modernly shaped Kadowakisaki Lighthouse. The 360-degree panorama of the seven Izu Islands and the Amagi Mountains from the observatory is a must-see. In addition to the scenery, wildflowers such as hydrangeas in June, lilies in July, and gold and silver chrysanthemums in autumn also delight the eye.

A Splendid Panorama from the Top of the Mountain, the Symbol of the Izu Peninsula/Mt. Omuro

Elevated 580 m above sea level, it has long been revered as an object of mountain worship and is a landmark of Izu, Ito, and Izu-Kogen. It was formed by lava that flowed during a volcanic eruption and is the largest in the eastern Izu volcano group. The entire mountain is designated as a natural monument, and since climbing on foot is prohibited for protection, a lift takes visitors to the summit. After a 6-minute aerial walk, visitors can enjoy a 1-kilometer tour around the crater ruins at the summit, known as “Ohachimeguri”. We hope you enjoy the astonishing panorama from Mt. Fuji to the Amagi Mountains and Sagami Bay.

From the lift, which skirts the surface of the mountain, you can observe seasonal flowers and grasses. Also, the annual "Yamayaki" (burning of the mountains) held on the second Sunday of February is a popular tourist event that heralds the beginning of spring in Izu, and is a 700-year-old tradition that was carried out to grow high-quality thatch. Currently, the Hachi Yaki, in which fire is set in the crater, and the Zenzan Yaki, in which fire is set at the base of the mountain, can be seen at the summit and the base of the mountain. The sight of the flames rising up the mountain as if they were running is truly impressive.

A 25-meter Drop and One of the Most Famous Waterfalls in Izu / Joren Falls

The waterfall spans a basalt cliff surrounded by trees. With a drop of 25 meters and a width of about 7 meters, it is one of the largest waterfalls in Izu, and it has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. The mysterious sight of moss-covered rock surfaces with folded formations and silvery white clear streams sliding down them is a must-see. Near the waterfall is a wasabi field, a specialty of Amagi, where visitors can see the cultivation of wasabi growing in the running water up close.

The waterfall basin, with its ample volume of water and its emerald color, has a mysterious glow. The fine spray from the waterfall, which falls with great force, creates a misty and refreshing feeling even in summer. There is also a fishing area around the waterfall basin where you can enjoy mountain stream fishing for rainbow trout and other species. Right in front of Joren Falls, there is a tourist center and a souvenir store, where you can enjoy the famous wasabi ice cream or choose from a variety of wasabi-based souvenirs, including authentic wasabi paste. Which one do you want to try first?

Enjoy the Blessed Seafood of Suruga Bay to Your Heart's Content/Numazu Port

Photo:Numazu City

Suruga Bay, with its deepest point at 2,500 meters, is the deepest place in Japan. Located here, Numazu Port brings in catches of mackerel, sardines, horse mackerels, bonito, sea bream, spider crabs, whitebait, and about 1,000 other kinds of seafood. There is also a whole restaurant district where you can enjoy them with outstanding freshness. Enjoy the charm of the deep sea at "Port 83", watch the fish auction from the visitor deck at the "Numazu Fish Market INO," and explore the "Numazu Minato Shinsenkan," a market mall featuring local products, where you can enjoy the unique cuisine of Numazu Port.

Numazu Port has plenty of tourist attractions. The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium has more than 100 species of deep-sea creatures on display. Only here, you will find on display two specimens of a coelacanth, a “living fossil”: one of them frozen and the other one stuffed. Don't miss the splitfin flashlightfish of the "deep-sea planetarium," which emits light under its eyes.

The huge Observation Water Gate, "View -O", one of the largest in Japan, is located 30 meters above the ground and offers views of Mt. Fuji, the Hakone mountain range, the bustling fish market, and ships passing by in Suruga Bay.
