Hakone, known for its scenic beauty and numerous attractions, has long been a celebrated hot spring (onsen) destination in the Kanto region. Its history dates back to the Edo period when people traveled from afar to enjoy its therapeutic waters.
Today, Hakone boasts 20 different hot spring areas, producing approximately 25,000 tons of hot spring water daily. Hakone offers a wide variety of hot spring experiences, with around 20 types of waters in terms of mineral composition. The oldest of these areas is Hakone Yumoto Onsen, established in the Nara period 1,300 years ago. Located along the Haya and Sukumo Rivers, it is blessed with the largest volume of hot spring water among all 20 areas.

Relaxing Day-Trip Hot Spring Between Sightseeing Stops: Hakone Yuryo

Hakone Yuryo is a large-scale day-trip hot spring facility styled after a rustic, traditional Japanese village. Its design captures a nostalgic rural ambiance while offering modern amenities. The spring water, from Tonosawa Onsen—one of the renowned "Hakone Seven Springs"—is mildly alkaline, and is known for its skin-soothing properties. Visitors can enjoy spacious indoor baths, forest-view open-air baths, and private pot baths. There are also 19 private rooms with open-air baths in the Hanare Yuya Kaden, the largest in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Natural Hot Springs in Scenic Gardens: Yoshiike Ryokan

Open-Air Bath

One of Hakone’s most esteemed traditional inns, Yoshiike Ryokan is celebrated for its high spring water volume. The six private hot springs supply pure, unaltered water directly to each bath, with no added water, heating, or circulation filtration. The outdoor baths for men and women offer a peaceful, immersive experience in nature.

Public Bath

A beautiful Japanese garden, called Sangetsu-en, surrounds a pond and features a place with six spring sources, which visitors can actually touch during a stroll. The high alkaline water is gentle on the skin. There are day-trip packages that include both hot spring access and garden exploration. Known for excellent cuisine, Yoshiike Ryokan also offers a popular steakhouse and Japanese dining options.

Relaxing Bath and Lounge: Yumoto Fujiya Hotel

Yumoto Fujiya Hotel is a high-rise hotel visible from the red-railed bridge over the Haya River. The onsen bathhouse “Soun” is named after the legendary Sengoku-period warrior Hojo Soun, who was said to have favored Yumoto Onsen. The hot spring’s abundant, smooth hot spring water can be enjoyed in outdoor baths for men and women separately, surrounded by nature for a rustic atmosphere. Highlights include rock baths with a skin-beautifying effect. Guests can also enjoy a private family bath and a low-temperature (around 50°C) thoron sauna, which encourages perspiration gently without stressing the body.

A new post-bath lounge has opened in 2024. This relaxation area offers a soothing atmosphere with views of nature through its windows, allowing guests to unwind after bathing. Massage chairs (for a fee) are also available to further relieve travel fatigue before or after a hot spring soak.

There are also value plans that include both the hot spring bath and a meal.

Sky-High Open-Air Baths and Power Spot: Tenseien

Tenseien is a 23-hour facility, operating from 10 a.m. to the following morning, making it very convenient. The Rooftop Open-Air Communal Sky Baths span 17 meters and offer an unobstructed view, allowing guests to enjoy the seasonal scenery of the lush nature around them while enjoying the spring water.

The facilities also includes various other open-air and indoor baths, reservable private baths with free-flowing hot spring water, dry and mist saunas, a free rest area, relaxation rooms (for naps), and a dining area, allowing guests to either rest briefly or enjoy a full day of relaxation. Private family baths with free-flowing hot spring water are also available by reservation.

The garden also features a “power spot” called Tamadare Falls, as well as Tamadare Shrine, a branch shrine of Hakone Shrine, which enshrines a deity of matchmaking, health, and water. After bathing, guests can also enjoy strolling through the garden in colorful yukata.
