During the Edo Period, Japan was closed to the world, and as a result of the Perry Expedition, Shimoda was the first port opened to a foreign country. At the Shimoda History Museum, there are around 1000 exhibits related to the Perry squadron, Matthew Perry, and the Russian Vice-Admiral Putiatin, including documents, photographs and personal effects.
